EIGHTEEN

Rowan didn’t look up as Tess wheeled her chair up close.

“Sorry, I know you’re in the middle of invoicing, but I had to share my news.”

Rowan let out a sigh as she sat back from her laptop and gave Tess her full attention.

“That call from Pete last week? I thought he was going to let poor Archie down again for the weekend, but he actually wants to take them to the Christmas markets in Frankfurt. Elsie feels she should go if he’s making an effort. I didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up too soon, but he sent the tickets over this morning. They’re actually going!” She couldn’t resist wheeling her chair around the office as though it was a dance partner. It was the best she was going to get as Rowan sat there, a neutral look firmly in place. Determined to get a reaction, she left the chair and came to rest with both hands on Rowan’s desk, her face a few inches from Rowan’s. She moved away quickly and turned towards her own desk. “And then the week after is school holidays so I can work longer hours if you need me.” Talking about work felt a lot safer.

Rowan turned back to her invoice with a longer sigh. Did Tess annoy her? Or was she struggling with this too?

“That would be good. I’ll have a look at what work we’ve got on and get back to you.”

Tess got back to her tasks. Rowan’s lack of enthusiasm was like a bucket of cold water over her excitement for her free weekend. She’d really been hoping they could spend some proper grown-up time together, even if they were destined only to be friends. But Rowan was acting strange and withdrawn, as if she had nothing to say to Tess anymore. Tess felt it like a physical pain. She told herself to focus on work, and she could worry about the weekend when it eventually arrived.

The rest of the week flew by as they got out the orders in record time. Tess often saw Rowan watching her, but she looked away quickly whenever Tess smiled or raised an eyebrow. She couldn’t fathom what was going on.

She finished early on Thursday evening to drive the kids down the motorway with their weekend bags. They
